Section A - Standard Negative Photography, or Slides

1. Know how to use your camera, what size film it takes, how to load and unload your film and how to keep your camera clean and remove dust and grit safely. Understand how any special functions can help your photography.

2. Know the functions of the different parts of a camera, such as the lens and shutter. Explain briefly how a negative and a positive of a print or transparency are produced.

3. Understand the difference between a compact (point & shoot) camera, APS and SLR.
Discuss the positive and negative aspects of each type of camera.

4. Use at least two different types of film (e.g. slide, black & white, "Ultra") and understand the significance of the figures and developing instructions on the film carton and on the cassette or wrapper (for example, ISO Din, C41).
Know when to use each type of film.

5. Explain at least two of the following, and provide photographs as evidence of your understanding:
a. the use of a lens hood
b. ultra-violet or skylight filters
c. coloured filters
d. depth of field
e. what camera shake is and how to avoid it
f. how to avoid 'red eye' when using a flash
g. the use of a remote control or self-time function

6. Take a series of at least 10 photographs, on one of the following themes:
a. Various aspects of Guiding (try to avoid the clichés!)
b. "The World Around Us"
c. "People and Culture"
d. "Get Active!"
e. "Architecture & History"
f. "Surprise yourself!"
g. A similar topic of your own choice

7. Do one of the following:
a. Produce a sequence of 5-15 photographs that tell a story (they may have been taken at different times)
b. Produce a series of photographs taken using specialist lenses, such as zoom, macro or wide-angle. Know the features of the different types of lens and when you would use each one.
c. Learn to develop and print your own photographs
d. Demonstrate how to mount slides, explain the advantages and disadvantages of card and glass mounts and describe the care of both types of mount
8. Explain the importance of storing prints, negatives and/or slides properly and the results of poor storage.

Section B - Digital Photography
1. Know how to use your camera, what type of memory card it takes, how to load and unload the memory card, what type of batteries it uses and how to keep your camera clean and remove dust and grit safely.
Understand how any special functions can help your photography.
Know how to transfer images to a computer.

2. Know the functions of the different parts of a camera, such as the lens and shutter.

3. Understand the difference between digital and non-digital photography.
Discuss the positive and negative aspects of each.

4. Produce a set of pictures showing that you understand how to store pictures in different file formats (including JPEG, TIFF and GIF) and how resolution and size can make a difference to the quality of an image when viewed on screen, or when printed.
Discuss the various options for transferring a picture from digital to print.

5. Take a series of at least 10 photographs, on one of the following themes:
a. Various aspects of Guiding (try to avoid the clichés!)
b. "The World Around Us"
c. "People and Culture"
d. "Get Active!"
e. "Architecture & History"
f. "Surprise yourself!"
g. A similar topic of your own choice

6. Explain at least two of the following, and provide photographs as evidence of your understanding:
a. the use of a lens hood
b. the use of filters
c. depth of field
d. what camera shake is and how to avoid it
e. how to avoid 'red eye' when using a flash
f. the use of a remote control or self-time function

7. Show evidence that you can use digital editing software to do at least two of the following:
a. Crop pictures
b. Add special effects
c. "Stitch" pictures together
d. Remove, or add details

Section C - Video Photography

1. Explain how to care for your video camera and which parts should be regularly cleaned, how they should be cleaned and which parts should not be touched.
Explain the markings on your camera, for example, F numbers, m, ft, fps, etc., and know how to use them to get the effects you want.

2. Describe the features you would look for when buying a video camera today and why you would need them.
Understand the difference between analogue and digital video cameras.

3. Explain the essential differences between video and still photography and the cameras used for each, the difficulties a video photographer is likely to face, and the techniques of a good video.

4. Create a film, lasting 10-15 mins, on a topic of your own choice, showing that you can use at least three of the following effects:
a. Zoom
b. Panning
c. Macro
d. Sound
e. Depth of field
f. Focussing
g. The use of filters
h. Solarisation technique
i. Lighting

5. Explain what camera shake is and how to avoid it

6. Show evidence that you can do at least two of the following:
a. Add sound or commentary
b. Add titles or subtitles
c. Edit film together
d. Copy film
e. Stills photography

Section D - Mixed Media

1. Know how to use your equipment, including care and maintenance.
Understand how any special functions can help your photography.

2. Know the functions of the different parts of your cameras, such as the lens and shutter.
Understand the difference between your different types of photography.
Discuss the positive and negative aspects of each.

3. Explain at least two of the following, and provide evidence of your understanding:
a. the use of a lens hood
b. the use of filters
c. depth of field
d. what camera shake is and how to avoid it
e. how to avoid 'red eye' when using a flash
f. the use of a remote control or self-time function

4. Use at least two different types of photographic media to tell a story

5. Using at least two different types of photographic media, explore one of the following themes in depth, showing a good understanding of the various techniques and skills used in each type of photography:
a. Various aspects of Guiding (try to avoid the clichés!)
b. "The World Around Us"
c. "People and Culture"
d. "Get Active!"
e. "Architecture & History"
f. "Surprise yourself!"
g. A similar topic of your own choice
