OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES USING THE SENSES
1. TOUCH BOXES
Make two holes in a box large enough to put your hands into, with
flaps to cover the holes when not in use. Put different natural objects
inside the box with some packing material. See if the girls can tell
what is in the box.
2. MEET A TREE
Find an area that has a variety of tree and put the girls in pairs.
One partner is blindfolded and the other choose a tree to introduce
her to. They should lead their partner to the tree using a round about
route. When they reach the tree, the sighted person lets the partner
feel the tree, guiding them to interesting parts and warning of sharp
bits etc. Once the blindfolded person feels that they know their tree,
they return to the starting point, remove their blindfold and see
if they can find the tree again.
3. TOUCH TRAILS
Set up a trail using a rope to lead to a variety of interesting natural
objects. Tie a knot in the rope to show a point of interest. Blindfold
the girls and lead them along the trail getting them to identify the
objects as they come to them.
4. QUIET SPOTS
In a particularly quiet spot or at night sit the girls down and ask
them to listen to the sounds - are they very close by, are they regular
or do they come and go, are they natural or artificial, which ones
do they like, which ones do not fit in with the setting?
5. WHAT'S THAT
Make a tape of sounds that might be heard outside and ask the girls
to identify them. (NB when making the sounds, write down a checklist
of what the sounds are coz our YL couldn't remember a few weeks later
what sound was what!!)
6. GUESS THE SMELL
Collect a group of smells that the girls might encounter out of doors.
Can they identify them? Eg ginger, lemon washing up liquid, pepper,
raw onion, vinegar, fresh orange.
