BOGUK is safe out of doors Complete clause 1, and any four others that provide a personal challenge. 1. Know where in the Guiding manual to find safety information. For a Guiding event, double-check that all safety rules have been followed, e.g. First Aid Kit, Lost Children plan, Emergency Contacts, access to telephones, ratios, clothing etc. Devise a checklist for a new Guider to help her think of all aspects of safety and emergency preparedness when out and about with children. 2. Hold a session, meeting or extended activity based on a safety topic of interest to your group. E.g. bullying, stranger danger, safety in a crowd etc. 3. Pick a sport or outdoor activity that you enjoy. Analyse all the risks involved in participating in it. Find out how rules, training, and safety equipment are designed for player protection during this activity. In addition, discuss with your group why people like to participate in activities that contain an element of risk. Can you discover why some people seek out risky activities and others fear them? 4. Know the Water Safety Code and show an understanding of safety signs and flags at the beach. Hold a session or discussion with a group of children on Water Safety. This should include how to be safe around pools, lakes, canals and other bodies of water; use of buoyancy aids or life jackets; and how to call for help in an emergency. 5. Know where you would expect to find a fire extinguisher and how to use it. Know what types there are and how to tell them apart. What type would you use on wood or paper, oil or petrol and electrical? Know when and why might you not tackle a fire with an extinguisher? 6. Know what to do if you are trapped by fire in a building. Know what to look for before a fire or other emergency occurs. Design a fire escape plan for your meeting place. Know where the fire exits and extinguishers are located. 7. Be able to read a street map or tourist map. Using a map, successfully navigate your way on foot round a strange town in a confident manner. What can you do to improve your safety when in a strange place? 8. Create a checklist of safety precautions for travelling abroad. 9. Design a safety plan for a Guide Camp or Holiday - take into account fire exits, cooking, campfires, use of gas lamps, and general site safety. 10. Help a group of girls to plan the personal safety issues relevant for a trip, such as what to do if you get lost, what if you get separated from the group on a train/tube, what if you are approached for directions etc. 11. Learn about ways in which you can improve your personal safety when out and about, such as placing money in an inside pocket to reduce chances of pickpockets. 12. Evaluate your daily routine. Are there any times when you feel vulnerable? If so, how can you improve your safety? Can you take an alternative route? 13. Take a self-defence class.
