Bird Cake

Ingredients
Equal quantities of...

  • shredded suet
  • shelled (NOT salted) peanuts - chopped
  • raisins or other dried fruit - chopped if large
  • bird seed, rabbit oats, etc
  • breadcrumbs
  • melted fat - preferably dripping but solid vegetable fat will do

Method : mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl then pour the melted fat in slowly so that the mixture is soft but all the liquid is absorbed : if necessary, add more bread to soak up excess fat.

Fill cake tins, patty tins, empty yoghurt pots, halved coconut shells or any other suitable container and place in the refrigerator to set.

Use the "bird cake" produced on bird tables, in bird feeders, or hang up the coconut shells and yoghurt pots where the birds can be safe from cats etc.
