This is such a beautifully presented programme that I have reproduced it exactly "as is"

We had a great weekend at the Renwick Building, Whiteley Woods, the Sheffield Guides Outdoor Activity Centre. See our website for pictures and things - www.shu.ac.uk/1stdoreguides. We had 2 rooms for the Guides to sleep in (like dorms with bunk beds), 12 per room. We named the rooms; Wild Wood and Riverbank (our leaders rooms were something like Moles House, Ratty's Home, etc.) We used the main characters for duty patrol names. The activities were chosen as things that are popular on a weekend like this :- Swimming, pioneering, outdoor cooking, archery, crafts, a party!! etc. But we tried to tie them in to the theme as much as possible. We were also trying to get the Guides through the Patrol Camp Pennant!!! We made masks for the party - I had printed out the templates from the web - unfortunately the site has now disappeared that had badgers, foxes, etc. but I'm sure there are more. One of our guest leaders found one these stories when the girls have to make a noise when a character is mentioned - similar characters to Wind in the Willows. Its amazing how time goes past so quickly on these trips. We had a couple of other things prepared but didn't need as the girls took so long over washing themselves and washing up. I had a couple of challenges ready - one based on "Ready, Steady, Cook", eg. "Ready, Steady, Build a boat". They would have been in teams with a certain number of materials each and some spares to stock up with. Limit the time and let them know what the requirements are, eg. how long the boat should float for. They must use all of the basic materials!! Use recycled/recyclable materials if possible :- Card, polystyrene chips, paper clips, rubber bands, scraps of string, blue tac, etc. We also had a little standby of making fish to put in a "River" - a paper one! Let them colour or paint (always keeps our lot happy!! arty lot!!!) them and then stick on a magnet. Odd bits of magnet from old fridge magnets are good for this and re-usable. Then make fishing lines from sticks they collect, string tied on the end and a paper clip for a hook. Give a team so long to catch as many fish as possible!!!! Very simple - good for Brownies too - fills a shorter space of time quite nicely and on theme! So, off you go and "borrow" my ideas if you fancy. No sense in reinventing the wheel. We wondered if this theme would be too young for Guides, but it was suggested by our older Guides! Have fun!!!
