BOGUK goes Camping Complete either Part A or Part B according to your existing knowledge. A - for novice Campers. Complete all clauses 1. Attend a Guide camp for the full duration, spending at least 2 nights under canvas. Show a good knowledge of Guide Camping. 2. Take an active role in the Guide Camp, preferably with a defined role. Be aware of the roles and responsibilities of each member of staff on the camp, and how the staff could change roles in an emergency. Understand the need for Guiders "time off" during a week-long camp. 3. Help to pitch & strike two different types of tent (e.g. a frame tent, a ridge tent etc) 4. Know where in your locality you can obtain the camping equipment necessary for a Camp. 5. Take part in preparing Guides for camp. 6. Show an understanding of the principles of camp hygiene and the importance of order and cleanliness in camp generally. 7. Know what clothes you need for different kinds of weather. Demonstrate that you are prepared to get out of bed in the middle of the night (eg wellies, coat, torch etc). 8. Evaluate your bedding against an experienced campers. Are there any changes you would make next time (e.g. more blankets, camp bed instead of air bed ….). Understand the advantages and disadvantages of using/not using bedding rolls. 9. Take part in a Camp Fire 10. Lay and light a fire, either one for cooking or a camp fire. B - for experienced Campers (e.g. Licence Holders). Complete all clauses 1. Have camped under canvas within Guiding for a total of not less than 15 nights. Be aware of the roles and responsibilities of each member of staff and how the staff could change roles in an emergency. Understand the need for Guiders "time off" during a week-long camp.
3. Know how to pitch & strike three different types of tent. Know the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of tents in different situation (e.g. a frame tent for a store tent, a ridge tent for a wash tent etc). Be able to adapt usage according to availability etc. 4. Know how to make simple tent repairs, and how to improvise guy ropes, pegs etc. Know what to do if a pole snaps, how to anchor a frame tent in windy weather and how to deal with leaks.
6. Evaluate three campsites. Why did you choose the one you did? Send a report to the BOGUK to help build up a "database" of campsites! 7. Provide the BOGUK with 10 "hints and tips" and 10 "what to do if …" or stories relating to camping. 8. Attend a type of camp that is new to you - e.g. Brownie Camp, International Camp, Lightweight Camp OR Attend a camp in a new role (e.g. First Aider, QM, GIC etc) OR Attend a camp for a week (if previously only a weekend camper) or in a new area or …… 9. Take an active part in training a new or inexperienced Guider the skills she needs for camping OR Help to develop materials suitable for a training session or booklet or website for Guiders about one or more aspects of camping.
